You'd think that with the seventh book over, there wouldn't be much new information revealed about the characters we know, other than what happens afterwards. However, JK has told us something new about Dumbledore, which you may or may not have expected. Have a look and see for yourself: news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071020/ap_en_ot/books_harry_potter

Wow, I never even thought about that! Guess it sorta makes sense. Thats awesome. I think there should be one gay character in every story. I just read that she also says that Neville gets married to Hannah Abbot. I was really gunning for Luna. Oh well. And Hannah is the new landlady of the leaky cauldron. xD

i actually was waiting for this. hahah. i thought i would have to wait till she got around to writing her harry potter encyclopida, but for a long time i thought dumbledore was gay.
and it just made even more sence when we heard about his childhood, and about Grindelwald. everything just kind of fell into place. now i'm just upset i didn't talk about it earlier, because i thought i was crazy! hahah.
i think i love both dumbledore and jk more for this, i really do. hahah.

i really don't see how people picked up on this. where in the entire book series except book 7 does it talk about his past. he was a very secretive man which i guess would mean that but still. i didn't see it coming. still love Dumbledore though

I think that Dumbledore being gay is kind of unrelevant to the story so i don't know why she is choosing to say it now. I mean that can't be the first time she has ever been asked about Dumbledore's love life. Why reveal that when the whole thing is over?
I always thought of him as asexual...and having so much to always deal with never having time for any love at all with anyone, man, women, dog, whatever. I still don't look at him as gay.
I mean no on ever knew the sexual preferences of Merlon...or Gandolf...or any other all knowing father figure character. They were the guide, not the main character so their past always remained a mystery and was seperate from the main characters story.
I honestly just don't agree with her decision to reveal that. I think it adds a deviance to the story that wasn't there before. I mean was Voldemort gay? or Dobby? how about Percy?
It's inappropriate and doesn't give anymore or less to the story...it just creates more questions and scandel.
If she had wanted to pioneer the appearance of a gay, main character in a children's book she should have revealed it when the books started. Saying it know is a publicity stunt. It's really disappointing and i thought she was always above that. Guess not.

I agree with you there. I thought that if she felt a character's sexual orientation actually mattered, she'd have included it in the books. If she thought about it but didn't mention it then, why mention it now?

well i think we all can agree that him being Gay really doesn't affect the Harry Potter story. it's just some character information that some people wanted. like for instance, i want to know who Draco marries and what happens to Luna. things like that. but i do completely agree with you Mary on that, i think she might of mad it up on the spot and developed reasons while she was explaining. i could be wrong

ah! she only mentioned it because it came up with the director (who wanted to put something in a scene that involved dumbledore talking to harry about a girl he used to fancy)... well, and because she was asked to answer a question. if you've had a character in your mind for several years who you always imagined to be gay -- even if it didn't have relevence or importance to the plot of the story... if you were asked a question like JK was asked why on earth would you lie to say "oh yes, he fell in love at the age 0f 29 but sadly the girl of his dreams died before he could purpose." now that sounds very ridiculous, but still. she answered the question. i do agree that the books are over and done with, which, actually makes this okay. if she was to throw it in the seventh book toward the end we would all have been like WHAT. why? or actually, why now? but she didn't. it was merely arroused by an innocent question. psssst! check out this editorial on mugglenet. tis brilliant. www.mugglenet.com/infosection/opinion2/defence.shtml

I agree with bookie. We all have loved the random information she has given in the after the books have finished about random characters that don't really affect the story, like George naming his first child Fred. It doesnt matter to the story line, it was just information someone wanted to know. It annoys me that people are making a big deal out of this. If she had said that he was in love with mcgonagall, this would be no big thing to most people. It wouldnt be plastered all over the news. And people calling this a publicity stunt, come on now, does she need more publicity? No she does not. She has back stories to almost all the charecters, and if someone asks her about one of them, she is going to answer them with information she has had pre-determined for years and years. No, it does not matter, but do we care? Not really. We'll take everything and anything harry potter. We can't pick and choose what new information we will reject and what we will accept. When JKR comes out with the encyclopedia, people will flock to it, because they want to know more, and it will give us much much more. No doubt dumbledore being gay would and will end up in that book. Along with a ton more information on everyone else. There is no reason whatsoever that this piece of info should be getting the criticism it is. If the world was more accepting of the matter, if there was no conflict on the subject of gays, this would mean next to nothing to us other than going "really? never pictured him that way" and stuff like that. Are we fans or not? Do we love JKR or not? Yes, yes we do. Lol, thats just my opinion anyways, and i have very strong opinions on the subject. This article written by someone on mugglenet words its very nicely i think. www.mugglenet.com/infosection/opinion2/defence.shtml

hahah i edited to include that link as well, and i posted a rather long comment. =P i could go on and on about my opinions but it would possibly only make me even angrier, especially after reading all the well, stupid comments on mugglenet. so i am just going to say one thing -- I love Dumbledore, I always have always will.
