another thing is that when they put in "praise from readers", they have folk saying things like "much better than harry potter" as if hp is the only other book series in existence

I know that if a book is advertised bt saying something like "If you liked Harry Potter/LotR you will like this" I know I will be very tempted to read it, lol
And ya know, someday in many years, Harry Potter may not be very popular. when all the people from this generation is gone, and not many remeber, there might very well be a new harry potter. And acaully I think that someday the government will become so... (cant think of a word) They will become afraid of magic or something or anything out of the ordianry and end up destroying all the great books.

i think personally harry potter will become a part of the GCSEs in a couple of years as it grips the minds of children everywhere and it would also make it fun to do the exam

I have read many books over the years, and have read some really good ones, and some real stinkers, but there is one thing about the really special ones that makes me say "I want to read that one again". They have a way of transporting me to a world where the rules are different, where there is "Magic". Not necessarily magic in the sense that the characters use magic, but that there is a place where I wish I could live, where I wish I could go when life is too stressed out. That is why I read--to get away from life for a while. That's why I enjoyed LOTR, and HP, and Narnia, and dozens of other books. I do not find this magic very often, and hardly ever in "adult" books. That is why, at 48 years of age, I still read children's literature. Comparing books to Harry Potter is not stupid. The stories may not be the same, but the magic is still there. If you like Harry Potter, you might like some of the other stories of the same genre (type), ie fantasy. If you limit yourself to just Harry Potter, then JKR has failed, in that she has not awakened you to new worlds, but isolated you in Harry's world. And that's a shame, because I know from experience, there are countless other worlds out there, if you just go looking for them! Sorry this is so long, but I needed to say this, and hope you can agree with me.

(WHOA! ancient thread lol)
I see what you're trying to say, but in saying that there are "countless other worlds out there", I feel that means that there are plenty other great things to read, but if all anyone ever wanted to read was books described as being "better" or "just like" Harry Potter, then JKR would definitely have failed.
Also, you're post isn't too long. ;D

zomg. it's like back from the dead. lol. oh-- and there is no such thing as a post that is too long, just and FWI.
I still stick to my opinion that I stated over a year ago. If someone says "you're the next JKR" I am not going to be to happy with the editor, or the publisher, or the person who said it, but that does not mean i am not going to read the book. In fact, I probably will read the book. So in that way it is a good device. If you stick a farmiliar name with a non-farmiliar subject, you will get publicity, or at least attention.
Thats why, while I don't agree with it-- i see their point, and I understand that in their eyes it is the perfect device.
I also agree with katnorris however. People who are stricktly JRK fans, are people who JRK would not be pleased with. She said so herself once, and I'm pretty sure her words were something like this.... I write so children will be tempted to read and write more, if that is not accomplished then I feel I have failed my readers... or something like that.
While I am completly obsessed with the world of Middle Earth, as well as Harry Potter's life adventure-- I am not scaled down just to their level. I love historically true autobiographies that tell what life was like in the early 50's or perhaps even 40's. An excellent example of this is called, Wait till next year. An autobiography of a young girl growing up in New York, a devout fan of the Dodgers... and her young life as a fan.
I also enjoy books of all different kinds, fantasty, yes-- but sci-fi, mystery, teen fiction... basically everything not to historically baised.. or not to stiff.
And i do see magic in books, but not in all books that I say I have enjoyed. The only books that hold magic for me are books that I could start reading for perhaps the 15th time, and be totally emerged and ready to let my life slide into fantasy, and let the book become an actual reality.
Look at my username for this site, and maybe you will see why i have so much passion for books.
Okay, now I have gone on for way to long. lol
