Many critics and religious fanatics say that the Hary Potter books are a vehicle for teaching Satanic practices to young children. What do you have to say about the issue?

I personally think that it depends on the views of the person doing the reading. For example, while I see an interesting story full of references to alchemy, astronomy, and mythology, others look and see demonic symbols. A good example of the latter would be the Cutting Edge. Although they have actually read the books and make several references to it, they find demonic trickery in every twist and turn of the plot. two of my favorite points from their article about Sorceror's Stone: wow, i didnt now that Hitler was a wizard! i would've thought it was either black or red...gee whiz, I'm dumb! oh, and one thing from there that bothers me a bit: in the article about the second book, the author frequently makes references to "Valdemort" instead of "Voldemort"

oh, don't get me started on this katie. those people piss me off. first of all, witchcraft, or whatever you want to call it, has absolutely NOTHING to do with satan. witches don't even believe in the devil. This whole thing about Harry Potter being "the devil" is based on ignorance and prejudice. Secondly, I've seen lists of the things these people think are "devilish" about Harry Potter, and they're absolutely rediculous! Not one of their points was even close to being considered a rational thought. Anyway, I think before anyone can criticize something like this they should really know what the hell they're taliking about. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Oh please. This has nothing to do with the Devil. People propagating this idea are total extremists. Besides, witches don't believe in the Devil. If JKR really wanted to propagate Satan etc etc, why would she include Christmas and all those festivals? Where is there any point in the book which touches upon the devil? Or Hell? Or anything like that? Its a simple story of good and evil. Hell, (pardon the use! ) if HP points towards the Devil, so does all other fantasy stories like Lotr and Star Wars! Its stupid crap...thats all there is to it.

TCO, i think you'd have a great time reading their lists of demonic references in the first four books. Also, did you know that the books teach us to use and make drugs? gasp!

Really? Oh no! And there I was thinking that unicorn hair and fluxweed were all make-believe things!!! Damn it, I could have used all the info to get high.
I've read a few articles about what they think are demonic references, and they are very funny. Its positively hilarious and incredible that some people actually believe in it.

Yes! Definitly!!! Burn the books to save your own soul!!!
Really funny question, Katie. D'you think anyone'd come on HP forum if they'd think that HP books carry the message of worshiping devil or something like that??
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Okay, this is what I think......if you don't like them....don't read them. Plain and simple, and if you are gonna ban Harry potter in schools (which they did in one school) then why not ban Wizard of Oz? it has a wizard in it!? or Snow White there is a witch in that!! If you got a problem with the books, Okay i'll make this simple.
[glow=red,2,300]THEN DON'T READ THEM!!![/glow]
Oh and don't forget LOTR it has two wizards in there along with dwarfs and elves and a DARK LORD. You don't see people banning those books. Also what about Sabrina the Teenage witch? People didn't seem to mad about that show, and the books that came out!

Ha. Same for Aladdin. With Jafar. All sorts of stuff. And LotR has 5 wizards, but the movie only talks about 2.
Well, the bible (which is the basis of people's argument against the series) explicitly talks about the evilness of witchcraft and forbids it. A) The book is a fantasy. It isn't real. It is make believe. People who would be considered 'witches' would probably not support Harry Potter because it is a happy type of story. B) WHO CARES? Like I said. It is just a story. Something to be entertained by. Personally I know that it isn't possible for me to just disappear and appear somewhere miles away. (apparate). I don't believe in the witchcraft (most people don't) but I like the story. the fun of it all.

LMAO- hun, Organic chemistry teaches people how to make drugs. And bombs. I'm talking about a required college course. Of course, it's not generally college students that most people worry about reading that stuff, but still... My big question is: if the Pope can give the books his approval, how come a lot of Catholics can't? And other sects, too, even though they don't consider the Pope to be the authority- how is it that this man who is supposed to be ultra close to God can say they're okay, and normal everyday people can go so far as to try to terrorize little kids about it? Just a thought on this: to quote a very good song ("The Christians and the Pagans" by Dar Williams) "You see magic from your God and we see magic everywhere" note: I'm not 100% positive about the exact wording; I'll look them up when I have time

Well, people have different definitions for Magic. Magic, the way the people against HP see it, is evil witchcraft and such. Magic to most other people is all fun super happy stuff. Whatever though. I honestly don't care. I didn't see that drugs part before. That is hilarious. I guess they have a right to be worried because kids have so much access to wolfsbane and gillyweed and such!

Ok- What I don't get is why every person that has ever said that Harry Potter is [glow=red,2,300]EVIL[/glow] has admitted to never even reading the books (at least anyone I've talked to). It's sooo Stupid!!!!

I also agree with this. They say the same thing about the movies and also the Lor, at first I didn't like them but then I took the time to read the books.
