Hey, guys Im re-reading the first Harry Potter book (cuz I havent read it in ages!!) and I just came across something I don't really understand... Right before the sorting takes place, Nearly Headless Nick is complaining about Peeves and says "he's not really even a ghost" Does this come up later on in the series? Can someone explain what this means? Just curious lol

It means that he's just some sort of... thing... whereas a ghost was once a living person.

ahah. yes. a thing. usually Poltergeists are slightly different from ghosts, more mischievous and stranger but still the same thing. Some people say that if they died at a time of rath, they would become a Poltergeist instead of a ghost. There are a million different theories, because tons of people believe in them.
But JKR says that a poltergeist is not the ghost of any person who has ever lived - and so it leaves everything a bit open. She could simply be using the mischevious thing as a different creature then records and other believes ... believe. Which is not only the core of fantasy, but very like her.
