In the story about the three Peverell brothers, each chose either the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone or the Invisibility Cloak according to the type of person they were.
In the present time, we know of three people who believe in the Deathly Hallows and who, at least at some point, wanted to find them: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald and Xenophilius Lovegood.
I believe that they may be meant as counterparts to the original owners of the Hallows: when Dumbledore was interested, he would have wanted the Stone, to bring back his parents and relieve him of responsibility; Grindelwald wanted the Wand to gain absolute power; and Lovegood matches the third brother, describing the Cloak almost lovingly, possibly wanting to hide away because of his treachery.
And all would have their own reasons for wanting to be Master of Death: Dumbledore would bring back his family, making up for his misdeeds and the various tragedies that befell them; Grindelwald's ambition, as a powerful Dark Wizard, would be to prevent his own death, though we know that after the years he lost the fear of death; and Lovegood would return his wife (who, of course, died as a tragic accident) and protect his family from danger.
I don't know if JKR meant to create counterparts in this way, but it's a thought.

yeah but how would the cloak let Lovegood be with his wife again? she's dead. i just find that strange to be part of your theory. i never really thought about their relation to the other characters except that they wanted them.

That part is probably more of a metaphor really. As in, though it wouldn't actually be an important thing, he feels terrible for what he did to make Luna get kidnapped, and probably for alerting the Death Eaters, and would want to metaphorically hide away from the truth. Also, as the most open-minded of the three (willing to believe in all the crazy things he does) he would fit most closely with the third brother, not to mention the fact that he is the only one of the three that doesn't die during the books.
