Peeves has been on my mind lately – I’ve been wondering where the heck he came from. Was he once a student at Hogwarts, or banished for his wicked deeds? He’s a poltergeist, but surely he was something before that.

Ja, I was thinking about this. He's not technically a ghost. So how do you become a poltergiest? Maybe it is something to do with how someone dies or something. Maybe Dumbledore accidently killed a student, Peeves, and let him stay in Hogwarts so he wouldn't get arrested. Hence the reason why he won't let Filch kick him out, for fear of him going public..

Hmm...that's a good theory Eidan...but do you think Dumbledore would do something like that?

not on purpose. But imagine if he did it by accident, it would ruin him. Either that or Snape got too annoyed one lesson, and Dumbledore wants to protect him. That is more likely, lol

A ghost is the spirit of a deceased person. A poltergeist is just a spirit. Peeves may have just ALWAYS been. He may just have evolved with the times. I don't think he was ever mortal.

Really? I didn't know a poltergeist was just a spirit. That could be true..maybe he lived at Hogwarts just to cause mischief..

Without going off into a religious discussion, think God.

Yeah, I agree w/ the idea that he was just always there, to play tricks on the students, and rat them out if they're out after hours. One of the founders probably didn't want to put up w/ him elsewhere, so they just put him at Hogwarts, so he wouldn't cause quite as much trouble as in a smaller place.

JKR never went into much detail about Peeves, if I remember correctly, so he kinda remains a mystery...

I don't think he is there because of 'god', because the books aren't religious one way or another. And most people think of christmas here, saying it's christian so they must be christian, etc, but most schools celebrate it regardless of religion. He is described as 'a little man with wicked dark eyes and a wide mouth'. I think he was there for some reason, I mean, some things have been changed for the HP world. Like a basilisk, in mythology it is, what, a six legged lizard with the ability to turn things into stone with it's glare. Not a snake. She may have changed it. We may never know.
