Why didn't Voldemort die when the killing curse backfired onto him? We know why Harry lived, that has been thoroughly discussed. But why didn't voldemort die? And why didn't anyone ask this question before.
This question came from Rowling herself. If you don't believe me, read the news from jkrowling.com. It is the question/answer period from her appearance at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
And also, why didn't Dumbledore kill Voldemort in the ministry hallway at the end of Order of the Phoenix when he had the chance? Or at least why didn't he try?

I think a curse weakens when it's backfired. That's why Ron stopped puking up slugs within a few hours.
I'm not too sure why Dumbledore didn't kill Voldy when he had the chance. Maybe, DD doesn't think killing is right, even if it will save wizardkind.

I don't think that's it. Ron's curse went straight to him because his wand was messed. But Voldemort's curse bounced off of Harry. It should have killed him.

Thats a good question. A good question that I have no clue as to what the answer is. But i think by then, voldy had gotton so powerful that maybe he was like inhuman:P just a thought.

Well Voldemort said himself that he had taken steps towards becoming immortal. So he probably did several long proccess of spells, potions, charms, etc. and so those prevented him from dieing when the spell bounced back on him. I think it probably left him kind of in a spirit form like at the end of HP1 when Quirrel dies.
And Dumbeldore told Voldemort that there are things worst than dieing so perhaps he didn't kill Voldemort because he wants to do that worse thing to him eventually...

Yeah, Voldemort's taken steps towards becoming immortal which saved his life the last time around. JKR is hinting that these are important because Harry's going to have to discover what these are and circumvent them before he can kill Voldemort and fulfil the prophecy.
I think what Dumbledore was trying to tell Voldemort is that a meaningless life is worse than no life at all. I mean Voldemort has been perpetuating himself all this time just so he can kill Harry and protect himself from the prophecy. Then what? He has no real purpose to his existence and JKR herself has stated that Voldemort has never known love. Dumbledore (and JKR) both value love very highly as a potent force for the good. I think that's what they meant in this bit.

Well that makes a lot of sense. Really. It does. But....what sort of steps had Voldemort taken to be immortal. I mean, I suppose we can always say potions and spells, that's the answer to everything isn't it?
Well now I just can't wait for JKR to finish the sixth so she can finish the 7th.

Well, we know that one of the things he did to keep himself alive was drinking unicorns blood, and we can probablt assume that if there were a consequence free spell that would make the caster immortal that more wizards would have tried it out.
So I'm going to guess that it's something grisly, like human sacrifice.

Then what? He has no real purpose to his existence and JKR herself has stated that Voldemort has never known love. i think there is a mistake, kupo. what of love for evil, love for power, love for killing, and of course, loving to rant on about "how he did it" ......kupo! i am scared, all this is veeeerry kupo.

I thought that for a while after book four. Now I just think that Dumbledore was pleased that Voldemort is properly human again and that means he can be killed once and for all.
