I don't like the new dumbledore at all...what happened to using Gandulf, from the lord of the rings? He would have done a waaay better job at the part! Your thoughts?

Richard Harris will never be topped for playing Dumbledore. I think that he was practically identical to how Dumbledore was described in the books! ;D

I didn't like the new DD mainly because Richard Harris brought to the part a certain warmth and relaxation that comes from being able to trust someone with all certainty that they know what they're doing. JK wrote that warmth into the book and Richard Harris delivered it almost with perfection. This new guy seems kind of sketchy...almost like they pulled a drunk off of the street and he's kind of half-a$$ing it most of the time. anyways, that's my thought on the new guy. I was also hoping for Gandalf from Lord of the Rings but to no avale. I'm wondering if they didn't even offer him the part because he's openly gay and because these are family movies they didn't want to risk that hurting their sales at the box office. That's the only thing I can think of. He would've made a much warmer dumbledore then michael whatshisname.

After watch PoA again I wasn't as harsh on Michael Gambon this time and came to the conclusion that he's not as bad as I thought. But Richard Harris was definitely better, especially in appearance. Harris' face is better and his white beard (unlike Gambon's yellowish beard) is great. In parts of the movie Gambon could have come across much better if he had just spoken the words more slowly. He speaks very quickly sometimes and is rushed. You don't imagine (at least I don't) an old wise powerful man as speaking quickly, but rather somewhat slowly and carefully as he chooses his words. We'll have to see how Gambon does in GoF...

I don't think it was homophobia on the studio's part. I think McKellen turned them down.
I'm pretty sure I remember an interview back when Richard Harris died and there were all the rumours flying around that Mckellen would take the role, where he said that he'd turn it down if they offered it to him because Dumbledore would be too much coming right on top of Gandalf and anyway, he was friends with Richard Harris and it would be too weird to take his job.
A lot of the things that struck me about Gambon's performance were probably directorial choices, but I certainly wasn't displeased like the rest of you. He may not look so much like Dumbledre physically, but I was happy with his performance. He bought out a little more than the 'wise old mentor' and we got to see a little of the comedy and darkness that I associate with the role.

i realy hate the new Dumbledoor HE's a flippen hippe for holy sakes!!! and he plays it soooooo wrong it's not even funny. You don't get the sence that he's knows more than he's letting on, while Harris(bless his sole) did. The new one should be fired!!

I think the new Dumbledore obviously lends a new dimension to the role. For Gambon to plainly copy Richard Harris' style would be ridiculous and just show that Gambon is of no use as an actor himself. The new aspect that he brought to Dumbledore is his own personal element and he's done it well, so rather than criticize him for not being like Harris, laud him for not copying a well-respected actor and for making the character a bit different.
